Custom turbo installation for an 06 Solstice (LE5) Jan/26/2008 14:32
Greetings guys, I need some serious help on an install.

I purchased this 'kit' from a guy who bought a custom built car but decided to swap in an LS2.

System Specs
*Garrett Gt2871r turbo (53/71 compressor wheel and 86a/r turbine)
*Cast turbo header (factory Saab turbo header)
*Custom LSJ (cobalt) 4 core laminova heat exchanger/intake manifold modified to fit the Solstice. Comes with a 2.5 bar map sensor to provide a load reference for the supplementary fuel injection.
*SMT-6 auxilliary fuel computer and a second rail of fuel injectors for supplementary fuel under boost.

Tuning was done with ls2-edit and the SMT-6 software with a low-boost map (14psi) and a high (22psi).

Now, I am not going to install the forged rods or pistons at this time but just need help with the overall install. Do you think you guys can help?

Thanks,
Seth

The install is not a problem. We do have a couple of questions though...On the pictures with it installed on the other car, there doesn't appear to be an intercooler installed, but we see one in the pics of the parts laid out. Also, is there a reason you can't just install larger injectors and tune it with HP Tuners?

As far as the install price, our labor rate is $82 per hour and since this is a used kit, we would just bill straight labor hours once the kit is installed.

Thanks for the reply Frank!

1. In the pictures, the small intercooler actually acts as a heat exchanger for the air to water IC and mounts up in front of the radiator. It's hard to see without the bumper cover off but you can see the top of it in http://s118.photobucket.com/albums/o87/idbfg/turbo/?action=view¤t=rightengine3.jpg

2. That is definitely more logical. I have no clue why he went through the trouble of installing a piggyback and redundant fuel rail.

My biggest issues with this install was figuring out the wiring for the fuel controller (have schematic - didn't really feel like doing the research to mate it with my harness) and where to run the water lines.

If option 2, how many hours do you suspect (roughly) for the simpler turbo install? Totally understand it's an estimate but I really have no basis for the job from a professional.

Hey Seth,
Thanks for the reply. A guesstamation of the install time would be 10-15 hours. We have a set of 60lb injectors for a GM, we would just need to see if they are the same style as the stock ones.

Shoot us a call and we can discuss further.

Seth,
Don't know how quick you are wanting this done, but we just had a cancellation for the mid/end of next week. Shoot me a call if you are interested. As far as the estimate of time, I tried to go worst case scenario, so if it takes less time, thats all you'll be charged is actual labor time.

Thanks for the info, Frank but I'll have to save a bit more to cover worst case + tuning. Having his old ECM and the already programmed piggyback I hadn't factored tuning into the initial plan.

I appreciate your time - best case (on my end) and i'll be seeing you in a week for tuning.

did you decide to try and wire in the SMT6 and use his old ecm? You could always do that for now, then when funds are free'd up, change injectors and tune with HP.

Actually - it took you pointing out the obvious that made me realize my biggest problem with the install, wiring up the redundant fuel system, could be bypassed altogether. I can most likely get the basic kit installed as it's mostly bolt-on with some fab work needed for mounting brackets. After that I should have plenty of money left for a GOOD tune from you guys specifically for my engine rather than the original builders low comp setup.

It's all about cost management. If this goes well, the extra money saved can go into those low comp pistons. Already have forged rods but I want to get this on the road on low boost for now.

Thanks guys - we will be in touch in the very near future either way

Sounds good Seth. Good luck, let us know when you are ready to tune.
